Malcolm Garrett is a founding partner and Creative Director of the design consultancy Images&Co. He is a founder and Artistic Director of the annual Design Manchester festival. Regarded as one of the UK’s leading authorities on design and branding in music, Malcolm’s career spans four decades from Punk to digital download. At art school in Manchester in 1977 he founded the graphic design group Assorted iMaGes, and later in 1994 the pioneering digital agency, AMX. In recent years he has lead numerous international design projects, working at the crossover of digital, virtual and real world experience. Malcolm has long been a collector of the media artefacts and cultural ephemera that fascinated him as a youth in the 1960s and 1970s and which indelibly informed his own graphic design profession. Much of this collection is now housed in ‘The Malcolm Garrett Collection’ at Special Collections Museum, Manchester Metropolitan University. The first Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in ‘new media’, with a passion for design education, he now represents the Royal Designers on the Sir Misha Black Awards Committee. In 2020 he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for ‘services to design’.
