The Middleton Musical Society was founded in 1772 by Sir Thomas Egerton, among 41 others. During the early stages of the society, meetings were held on the Monday nearest a full moon due to there being no street lights, and before they were held at churches, took place at inns and taverns. In its more recent history, the society had to cease performances from 1930-1952 due to a small membership, resuming with a mixed choir, something which has continued to this day. In 2014, a world premiere of 'If We're Not Together We're Nowt' was given at the Bojangles Theatre in Middleton, a play which celebrated the Rochdale Pioneers on their 170th anniversary. Currently based at St Stephen's Church, the society constantly encourages new members. Renowned soloists have also come from the society, with Isobel Baillie, Owen Brannigan, and Elizabeth Harwood being noted.
