Born Raymond Cartwright in Tyldesley, Lancashire, the surname Gilvan came from the stage name he had when performing Gilbert and Sullivan as a boy at Tyldesley Secondary School for Boys. Still a boy (born 1934) during World War II, Raimund was employed in the military orchestra during his service, staying in Germany after the war and studying at the College of Music in Cologne, where he transitioned from instrumentalist to tenor, under the wing of Ellen Bosenius. Raimund made his debut in 1961 for the State Theatre of Mainz, moving to the National Theatre Mannheim in 1963, staying until 1974. While still performing, Raimund's last post was as a Professor at the College of Music in Saarbrücken.
