Beginning violin lessons at secondary school, Colin later attended Saturday classes at the Northern School of Music. On leaving, he gained a role at Salford Music Service, becoming the first music teacher in the Northwest to complete the Suzuki violin training. He later became head of music at Salford, leading him to taking their Youth Orchestra abroad, which was a major step at the time. Around this period, Colin began to conduct Lowry Strings, taking over from their first conductor, Sean Munster. He later moved from his role at Salford Music Service, taking up a position with the Bolton Music Service. Over the years, Colin also played in several groups, which included Salford Symphony Orchestra, Bolton Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Opera Orchestra, as well as being the Musical Director for West Manchester Operatic Society.
