Located on Aytoun Street, Manchester, The Grand, as it's known overall, started as a cotton warehouse, which was built in 1867 by Mills and Murgatroyde. In 1880, the building was converted into The Grand Hotel, remaining a hotel for almost one hundred years. According to archival imagery, the hotel boasted private phones in every room and twenty new well-lighted stockrooms, as of 1929. A Frank Bailey was manager during this time. At the start of the new millennium, the building re-opened as grand high-tech service flats, which were designed by the architect Ian Simpson, known for 1 Deansgate, Urbis, and Beetham Tower. The Grand is a Grade II listed building, still operating today as The Grand Apartments.
