The choir at St James Church was led by Walter Carroll. Carroll was a bit of a legend and a man of many musical talents which reflected in his handling of the church choir. So much so that when re retired as choirmaster the atmosphere changed within its members and many sought to leave, according to the gossipy letters of bass singer Geoffrey Griffiths. It didn't help that WW2 was just around the corner either. The choir was chocka with sopranos then and shared some talents with the chorus at the Hallé.
