Arnold Cooke
Arnold Atkinson Cooke (1906-2005) was a classical music composer and Professor at the Royal Manchester College of Music in 1930s. He wrote all sorts - opera, choral work, symphony and ensemble.
He worked in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and afterwards became a founding member of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain.
Although never "out" it was understood that Cooke was gay. Homosexuality was only partially legalised in 1967 in the UK so it was a sort of "don't ask/don't tell" approach to his career. (I kind of just hope he was happy - that must have been tough.)
