Edith Robinson

Edith Robinson was born in Manchester in 1867. She studied with Adolph Brodsky in the Leipzig Conservatoire and became a successful violinist. She ended up coming back to Manchester and taught at the Royal Manchester College of Music from 1907, of which Brodsky by then was principal. As he continued his work with Brodsky Quartet in the city, she formed the Edith Robinson Quartet, an all female string quartet in response to the all male Brodsky group.

Her quartet was pretty pioneering. Not only was it likely the first all female professional quartet in Manchester but it quickly gathered a reputation for performing a wide repertoire, focusing on performing newer music and broadening the city's musical palate.

In the 1920s there was the Edith Robinson Trio. This featured Edith as the lead, working with Carl Fuchs (a German cellist) and Frank Merrick (a Mancunian pianist). 

She died in 1940.
