The Mattay School Of Music
Founded by Hilda Collens in 1920, The Matthay School of Music was named after Tobias Matthay, the English pianist, teacher, and composer. Hilda named the School after Tobias, as she had been a student of his from 1910-14. The Matthay started in Deansgate with only nine students taught by Hilda, specialising in the pianoforte teaching methods favoured by the composer. After operating under the name for 23 years, it became the Northern School of Music in 1943, eventually becoming the Royal Northern College of Music in 1973.
