The Manchester Mekons were part of the Manchester Musicians collective which was formed in 1977. Lead guitarist Frank Ewart was the driving force behind the band, which included Louise Alderman [bass], David Pimlott [gtr/vocals], Francis Alford [keyboards/vocals/sax], Chris Parkinson [drums] and Chris Griffin [flute]. From the Messthetics 106 liner-notes [September 2008]: "Frank, David and Chris [P.] had been playing together since they were students at Burnage High School for Boys. Frank was one of the first kids off the street when the MMC opened their doors in April 1978, and The Mekon were soon born with the addition of David's housemate Francis Alford and Louise Alderman, Dick Witts' then-girlfriend (who'd been getting bass-lessons from Tony Friel). Francis moved out but stayed in the band; Frank moved in, and the house on Burton Road became the MMC's unofficial after-hours HQ, teeming with visitors [The Fall and Joy Division jammed there] and a virtual library of oft-loaned gear..."
