The Thunderboys were a Manchester new wave band formed during the autumn of 1978, disbanded 1980. They produced tight, bouncy pop songs and provided an intriguing foil to the saturnine Joy Division/New Order (with whom they briefly shared rehearsal rooms at TJM studios). They came into Penine Studios during the summer of ’79 where we had the pleasure of recording and producing five of their best tracks for a Piccadilly Radio Session.
The Thunderboys were a five piece with two singers; The impressive Carmel McCourt who later scored several UK hits simply under the name of “Carmel” and Lionel “Danny” Daniels who went on to form Wild Honey.
The Thunderboys rhythm section consisted of Chris Hall on bass and drummer Alan Adler who following the break-up of the band attained prominence as one of the UK’s leading illustrators.
Terry Baker’s quirky guitar riffs added the finishing touches to the highly original sound of one of Manchester’s most underrated bands from that era.
Although worldwide success proved elusive the Thunderboys managed to gain a cult following as one of the city’s most innovative and best-looking bands of the late 70’s, their visual image significantly bolstered by the fact that three members attended the culturally influential Manchester School of Art.
The Thunderboys' one and only single was the playfully energetic “Fashion” (B-side “Someone Like You”) EJSP 9339. Recorded at Drone Studios and released in the UK early 1980.
