The Knives were a band based in Chorlton, all good mates of mine for years, and some of them played in my own band The Ride at one time or another.
They were: Stewart (The Stalwart) Butler on sax, or 'threlptubes', as he called them! (ex-Rider); Ronnie Hardman on bass, (ex-Paper Dolls and Guys!); Phil Judge on guitar (also ex-Paper Dolls); drums was Roy Mortimer who was also 10cc's PA as well, they played all the local Manc haunts at the time (Approx 1983/4) .
The Stalwart dressed as a gangster and drove a very old Lagonda Symphony getting outa that with his sax case in his hand you could not miss him as he really looked the part, very weird musical style, I think Stu called it 'Punk Jazz' top stuff.
