Dutch Uncle was formed in 1985 in Hulme; a trio of Andrew Behan, guitar, bass and vocals, Phil Lukes, guitar, bass and vocals and Andrew “Scott” Holt on Drums. Scott left in 1987 to be replaced by Roland TR909 (a drum machine) and Paul Smith on keyboards and vocals. Despite writing many great songs, Dutch Uncle remained resolutely local, out of step with Baggie and missed the Madchester tide, where even the postman walking by whistling was likely to be offered a record contract if he came from Manchester. DU split in 1990, but collected their 12 high quality demos onto a CD, Love Dutch Uncle, in 1995 and even later, in 2011 compiled another made up of seven “rescued and repurposed” live to DAT recordings made at Out of The Blue Studios in 1990 plus a handful of new recordings.
