The Snipe
Sent in by Colin Blades:
The Snipe were Steve Miller: Vocals & Poetry, Dave Midwood (ex Foreign Press): Guitars, Ged Yeats: Bass, Wayne Montrose (ex Maracaibo): Drums, Percussion & backing vocals.
Originally formed in October 1979 after a meeting of like minds in the Salisbury Pub, Oxford Road rehearsals took place at the now legendary TJ Davidson’s rehearsal rooms, Little Peter Street, Manchester.
The band's musical prowess and stage presence prompted residencies at The Dive bars, Manchester - (Saturday), Sedgley Park rugby club, Prestwich - (Sunday), The Duke of Wellington, Swinton - (Wednesday s)to name but three. The Snipe were never short of gigs and soon built up a strong following of 'Snipers'.
Steve (Whispa) Cundall of The Drones briefly managed the band and did a sterling job of promoting them in those early days, it was through
his efforts that The Snipe managed to do so well in such a short space of time, the band broke-up in 1980.
So sadly Wayne Montrose has sinced passed away in – a great talent so badly missed by all who knew him.
Steve and Dave have began writing again and soon these songs along with some old favourites will be heard once again under the name The Snipe.
