Rich but Happy were an Urmston 4 piece vocals/guitar Steve O'Donoghue , guitar Rod Smith, bass Adam Speakman and drums Jason Kellett.
They merged jangly guitars with heartfelt lyrics of loss hope and rejection. Popular songs were Tattered and Torn, Ashtray of Aristocracy, Lost Those Jewels, On My Mind.
Sounding like a cross between Aztec Camera and The Smiths the band could have possibly been seen as too derivative of the time. After courting some local record company interest the band inevitably began exploring new directions in the hope of commercial success.
The bands sound was becoming more rocky which led to Steve and eventually Jason leaving the band.
Rod and Adam continued and formed Hulio Ridiculo and Steve formed Salvatore before eventually embarking on a solo career signing to German label Firestation Records and releasing the album Martha to critical acclaim.
Rod would eventually join One Lady Owner who released one album on Alan McGee's Creation Records
Adam along with Hulio Ridiculo drummer Ian Bamford formed Manchester band MooreMarriot. Both Ian and Adam played on Steve O'Donoghue's Martha album.
