Syncopation were a Manchester band formed in 1981. Members were Jim Carter and Peter Hawksworth from Chadderton in Oldham and Craig Rostock and Mike Calderbank, both from Salford.
They were formed from a previous band called Future Primitives that originally consisted of Jim Carter, Duncan Prestbury who later became a member of the Jazz Defectors and Carl Burns the original drummer of the Fall. Prestbury and Carter had previously worked with Tony Friel after he left the Fall.
Syncopation had a brief moment in the limelight between 1981 and 1984. At one point tipped to be the next big thing in Manchester, they released their one and only single, Marking Time, appeared in all the music press, supported the Jam at the Apollo, and Curtis Blow in Lo London amongst others.
They were managed by John Barrett who owned the Record Pedlar on Swan Street and they rehearsed for a long time in the same Lower Broughton rehearsal rooms as Joy Division, New Order, ACR and others.
Very much part of that vibrant post punk scene, they lost traction when the final stages of a record deal broke down.
Jim Carter and Peter Hawksworth left the band in 1984 and Craig and Mike went on to form Tinsel Town
