The Decptions
Sent in by Dave Wright:
Originally called The Rhythm Romantics, The Deceptions' core line-up comprised Ron Piddington, guitar/vocals, Andrew Howarth, drums and Dave Wright, keyboards.
Formed in 1979, they played their brand of English power pop in pubs and small clubs in the Greater Manchester area until 1983, and briefly got back together to record in 1984 as James Taste & The Backsliders, and again in 1985 as WE3 without much success.
Over the years they worked with numerous bass players and before the original split in 1983 Carl Hamilton played lead guitar.
After Ron Piddington departed, finally in 1985, Andrew Howarth and Dave Wright went on to form Safe Houses along with Pete Stubbs, who had worked with Dave Wright on a project of the same name, and Loz Greene, formerly of Joe Stalin's Red Star Radio Band (with Mick Hucknall).
It started to look promising Until Dave left to pursue domestic bliss!
Safe Houses continued for about a year, until they drifted apart to pursue other interests.
A number of Deceptions songs can still be heard on www.bandman.co.uk. Just search for The Deceptions. It will be worth hearing how a true Manchester post-punk band sounded.
