Band / Artist
The Ivan D Juniors
Philip Harley sent us this recollection:
Hi from Leicestershire
I distinctly remember seeing the Ivan D Juniors in 1964, (possibly '65) and it seemed to make a lasting impression on me.......don't know why particularly as I've seen loads of groups over many years. To an impressionable teenage beat group wannabe at the time they were the tops......
They came to the Yarborough Hotel in Grimsby and as I remember wore matching dark blue jackets. Numbers they played included "Talkin' About You", (Berry) and a hit of the Supremes at the time "Where Did Our Love Go" with a strange but fun choreographed routine round one mike. It sticks in my mind that this was the first time, (and I'm a long in the tooth semi-pro muso myself) that I'd seen anybody playing "bottleneck" electric slide guitar. The short, dark haired lead guitarist was extremely good and played a cherry red Gibson SG. Someone said he'd got a girlfriend in Grimsby at the time and that's why they were there.
The band had quite a tall, charismatic singer who did a bit on amplified acoustic at times but ended up knocking it like a bongo drum and the bass player, with a Fender Precision bass I believe, practised a rather neat clenched teeth smile, very showbiz. I picked up on that then and have done it myself ever since. He joined the Hollies a short while later, I recognized him on the TV obviously.
Hope these guys are still rockin' wonder if they are?!!
