Dave And Dave
Dave Phillips writes:
DJs Dave Lomas and Dave Phillips: 'Dave and Dave' were the DJ's at Manchester’s BLUE NOTE Club; 1967-1969
They followed on from Lez Lee after Roger Eagle had left.
The Blue Note was a club quite close to the Whitworth Street TWISTED WHEEL. It was located on Gore Street. The club was run by John Fogel, but started by his sister Debbie, it was her who obtained Roger Eagle as the clubs first DJ, poaching him from the Twisted Wheel for an extra couple of quid!
Roger Eagle had set the agenda at the club for solid American black music R&B and Stax (imports) along with all the sounds he pioneered at the Twisted Wheel. The Blue Note was an ‘eclectic’ Soul music club as a result.
Dave and Dave honoured the tradition, introducing new soul sounds alongside keeping up playing the tracks that Roger had popularised.
Artists like Albert King could be heard on the record decks at the club and nowhere else in Manchester.
It was at the Blue Note, often before the ‘Wheel’ caught on, that many soul tracks were discovered first ; e.g. Tommy Neals ‘Going To A Happening’.' (Submitted 11.01.08)
