Drive In Rock

Drive - In Rock was a ten piece rock 'n' roll band based in West Didsbury from 1972 to 1974. The band evolved out of the (slightly) psychedelic outfit The Ape Liberation Front when three members of that band decided to play 1950s rock 'n' roll in a more authentic manner than was the custom at the time. Starting as a five piece, the first line - up was: Leroy Kool: lead vocals Edsel Odeon: guitar, vocals Pete Tungsten: alto & tenor sax Rocco Lampone: bass, vocals Disco Volante: drums. Almost straight away, Disco left and was replaced on drums by Mack Truck, and Timmie Shirt Joined on second tenor sax. At the same time The Rockettes were added as background vocalists: Cathy Hopkins. Anna O' Malley and Lois Hilton at first, then Cathy, Patti Dooley and Nicky Crewe later on. In early 1973, Little Richie Close was added on piano. With former Twisted Wheel disc jockey Roger Eagle as their manager, they played mostly on the college circuit and at dedicated rock 'n'roll cubs. In 1974 they downsized to a five piece and changed their name to Leroy & The Kools after various members left to persue other avenues of fun.
