The original 4 founders of The Brownsville Jug Band in Manchester in the mid 1960's were - Alan Knight - guitar/singing/kazoo, Steve Blakesley - harmonica, Ray Schofield - snaredrum, cowbells and traps, Keith Harrison - initially jug and washboard). We had all hailed from Pendelbury between Salford and Bolton and all were ex-same-year of Cromwell Road Secondary School for Boy's. 'Tweedy' joined the band (making 5) and took up jug and washboard whilst Keith Harrison took up mandolin & G Banjo.
A tape was recorded in Tweedy's bedroom and made into just one LP in about 1969.
The band established a friday night folkclub in an upper room of the Wheatsheaf Hotel on High Street off Market Street in central Manchester close to Picadilly.
Appeared in one of the programmes of the original Granada TV First-timers talent spotting programmes in late 1960's before it went 'national' - tune played was tiger rag and we dressed a bit like 1960's gangsters. No fee, we had no van so we went everywhere by train and bus.
Band also appeared in same show as Maddie Prior and Rev Gary Davies at Ashton Town Hall, Manchester Sports Guild - several times, Warren Buckley Hotel Jazz Club in Stockpork and did some gigs in London & lake District.
Band went to Sweden in 1970 (Keith Harrison left at that time to go to university and a new guy joined take up mandolin and banjo). They appeared once on TV in Sweden.
