Gerald Hopkin was a student of the Royal Northern College of Music, performing as a violinist in the RNCM Symphony Orchestra in December, 1975. Two years later, it was reported that Gerald was the first violinist with the Hallé Orchestra in 13 years. At the same time, the late 90s, Gerald was Head of Music at Prestwich High School, Bury, and leader of the Bolton Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonietta. As of 2001, Gerald was musical director of New Century Strings, Bolton Music Service's advanced youth string ensemble, with his wife, Gill, Head of Strings around that time. Both were recorded as being freelance violinists and tutors in a 2020 letter to Rishi Sunak.
