Before joining the Royal Northern College of Music, Douglas Scarfe was Principal Horn in the National Youth Orchestra, winning the Peter Morrison award for his contribution to them, something of which he balanced with school. At the RNCM, studying alongside Hugh Potts, Douglas won another award, the Hiles Medal for Orchestral playing. From the archival programme, Douglas played the horn at one of the RNCM's many Coffee Concerts, this particular one being in Didsbury. After a successful career as performer, Manager, and Director at Opera North, Douglas became Chief Executive of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 2012. Throughout his career, Douglas has also been Assistant Director of Music at Aysgarth School, horn tutor at Chethams School of Music and multiple universities, as well as coaching Youth Orchestras in Lancashire, Merseyside and Sheffield. Dougie was also responsible for the North West's part of the William Walton Centenary in 2002 and Founder Trustee and Chairman of the Yorkshire Young Musicians Board of Trustees from 2005-2007.
