Born in 1938, Christopher Yates joined the Royal Northern College of Music as Dean of Postgraduate Studies in 1980 and became the first Vice-Principal of the College in 1990. During his time in the role, he was responsible for the curriculum, as well as the running of daily events. Before his appointment at the College, Chris was co-principal flute with Sadler’s Wells Opera Orchestra in London, orchestral manager with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and general manager and company secretary to the Northern Sinfonia in Newcastle. As a highly influential and helpful member of the RNCM, many have paid tribute to him, with Edward Gregson, a former Principal Professor at the College, saying that Christopher "was a hugely likeable person - intelligent, perceptive, and with an endearing dry sense of humour." Due to his many brilliant traits, Christopher Yates was made a Fellow of the RNCM in 1982, before stepping down as Vice Principal in 1999, two years before leaving the College entirely. Christopher passed in 2014, leaving behind his wife and two daughters.
