Born in Manchester in 1946, John Rath was a bass-baritone. John studied singing whilst doing a degree in Drama at Manchester University, now the University of. John continued to perfect his vocals, studying with Elsa Cavelti, the dramatic soprano, in Basle, where through the Opera School, he played minor roles at Basle Opera House. John also attended summer courses during his time studying. Following on from the Accademia Chigiana in Sienna and Mozarteum in Salzburg, John had sung in Salzburg, Frankfurt, and London in the New Opera Company's production of The Nose (Shostakovich). In 1974, he was a postgraduate student at the RNCM under Mr Colin Jones, representing the college at an International Congress in Yugoslavia. which resulted in radio and television broadcasting. He also performed in the RNCM's Aida, as well as in other RNCM Opera showcases. In his later career, John performed multiple times at Glyndebourne (1977-79), and for Opera Scotland (1986-91).
