Welcome to our online exhibition exploring club life and music culture in Moss Side and Hulme from the 1950s onwards.
This exhibition comprises photos, flyers, footage and interviews depicting one of Manchester music's most vibrant yet unsung scenes and its underlying political and social history.
The Nile and The Reno clubs are discussed in interviews with a number of pioneering Moss Side scenesters, including Reno Club DJs Persian and Hewan Clarke; flamboyant Caribbean Club compere Franklin Jackson; Jah Music soundsystem builder Owen Townsend and Moss Side writer Yvonne McCalla.
The exhibition also covers punk at The Russell, reggae at The PSV, festivals at Alexandra Park, squat raves at the Crescents, blues and shebeens and beyond.
As with our main site, this project is a work in progress put together by volunteers. There are still many gaps, which we hope you will be inspired to fill. If you have any artefacts or recollections that you would like to add, please email them to info@mdmarchive.co.uk.
With special thanks to Dubwise-er, Commonword Writers' Agency and Ashley Kennerley.
