2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s incendiary ‘Judas’ gig at Manchester Free Trade Hall - a gig that has has been hailed as one of the twenty most important moments in rock history, the electrifying night the young American poet clashed head on with the traditionalist die-hards of the folk scene.
Manchester District Music Archive is celebrating this outstanding event with a fundraising concert of our own.
The evening will see Dylan’s set list from that night performed by a collection of Manchester’s finest musicians, with each group or performer playing one song from the original 1966 concert.

Archives are closely linked with how we understand history and can be a site for resistance and celebration in challenging how history is defined. This event will explore some of Manchester’s less visible musical histories whilst opening up access to rare and fascinating material, including objects from the People’s History Museum’s own archive. It will reveal how music and politics are inextricably linked in our city’s history.
Activist / Archivist will bring together a diverse group of speakers who have helped to shape the landscape of Manchester music. Each guest will present an object that is important to them (such as a photo, flyer, record, instrument or autograph) and tell its story. These items will then be scanned or photographed and uploaded to MDMarchive’s online archive. Bring along prized items from your own collection and learn how to archive your music heritage online.

Wanted: your Manchester Academy memories
Manchester District Music Archive & University of Manchester Students' Union are teaming up to celebrate 25 glorious years of gigs at Manchester Academy 1.
Together we are building an interactive online exhibition of images and stories, which will document the incredible history of all four Academy venues, from 1963 to the present day.
But we can’t do it without your help. We want you to upload your photos, ticket stubs, nicked set lists, autographs, videos, flyers and posters to MDMarchive, but above all we want your memories.
What was your favourite ever gig or club night at an Academy venue? Who was the most magnetic performer you've seen? Did you meet the love of your life at an Academy gig? Have you promoted a night yourself at an Academy venue? We want to know about friendships forged, front row feats, spilled pints, lost keys and all those life-changing musical memories.
