“'Little Martin' was Martin Pendergrast (one part of T-Coy with Mike Pickering - later of M People 'fame'). He was one of the earliest exponents of the 'style' that eventually became known as 'baggy'.
As early as 1983-4, he had the Byrdsian basin cut (along with John Squire), and he wore semi-flares and turtle-neck jumpers; cotton plaid shirts etc.
He relocated to the States just before the whole Madchester thing was foisted on us. I only saw him a couple of times after that, but his sister, Brenda, and the rest of his family remained in Chorlton.
Never quite got his love for the dross that is/was Chicago House, but hey, a million people can't be wrong right? Right?”
“The Wainwrights were from the Marple area as I remember it. A bunch of very young lads at the time; the guitarist was called Olaf, a very Marpalian name.”
