“Mondays at the Ritz. An institution. Bobbing around on the bouncy dance floor to 'Nelly the Elephant' (or similar Ritz anthems). One of the best aspects of the Ritz experience, was falling out of the place at 2am with a beer induced hunger that could only be satisfied by one thing - chips and gravy froma n Oxford Rd chippy. And 2am gravy was as good as it got - sitting around all day congealing and condensing until reaching its treacly, dark brown zenith in the early hours of the morning. Mmmm....”
“Classic. I did the cheapo bus trips to Athens a few times. The saving grace was that you'd typically meet a bunch of top people (fellow passengers). The rest was all down side. Invariably shite coaches (don't be fooled by the flash one in the ad) driven by amphetamine fuelled Greek drivers. 3 days to get there - can you imagine the smell of the bus on arrival at Athens. Food and drink was obtained by robbing each service station along the way (I'm now ashamed to admit). But not in Yugoslavia - no way. First, there nothing worth nicking. But more importantly it was also completely obvious that everyone there was completely psychotic. Even in the mid 80s it was obvious that the place was a total powder keg.”
“Blimey! Amazing that you've kept the flyer after so long. This was one of my favourite clubs in Manc (the Wilde Club at the Man Alive). Chock fulll of the Hulme shaven head brigade (courtesy of the '70p man' near Afflecks). Bodines played back to back with Trouble Funk or Gil Scott-Heron (RIP). Wicked times indeed.”
“Nice observation re the Arts degree (did a BA Humanities+ Social Studies degree from 84 - 87 - and spent most of that time going to gigs and drinking beer).
Also a fab post - thanks! Like you, I was at the Lone Justice gig, but think I missed the Microdisney one. Bugger.”
