“Funny thing is; along with the local authorities in Bury and Rossendale, (Deeply Vale is roughly where all three boroughs meet), Rochdale MBC did everything they could to ban the Deeply Vale festivals! Now they erect a heritage plaque mentioning it!”
“Interesting that you mention Cob Records there. Their Bangor shop (although that and the Porthmadog branch became separate entities a few years ago) closed its doors in April this year although proprietor Owen is still promoting the odd live concert.”
“It's also worth noting that Tony set up the Vibes label. If you check out 'The Reducers' under the 'Bands' index there are some artifacts there. The two 'mainstays' of The Reducers were vocalist Graham "Raggy" Holden (who was sadly killed in a road traffic accident some years ago near Johannesburg) and lead-guitarist Roy Tynan who now lives in the Hebden Bridge area.”
“Thanks for posting this. Yes it was on Nervous records but came out in 1987. I'm reliably informed that the album got to No 17 in the Finnish charts (though charts are obviously 'pro rata' to the population so that probably means that three people and a reindeer bought it!)
Did the Morrissey video come off? I must ask Jamie (as I've certainly never seen it) though I know he was in Robbie Coltrane's video for the single "New Orleans."
Incidentally, the sleeve was designed by our friend David Calderley (who has quite a portfolio and now lives in NYC) and the photo was taken at The Hacienda by no less a personage than Kevin Cummins himself.”
“This was 1981 Phil (I've just verified on one of those 'perpetual calendar' thangs). Thought so as I think it was around Sept 82 when we'd become The Rhythmaires.
Dr Filth's lead guitarist Paul 'Tot' Thomas was also ex-Renegades. Dr Filth's series of 'dep' drummers included Alex Sidebottom of The Distractions and John Maher of The Buzzcocks.
Steve Halliwell (aka Zak Dingle) did indeed write and direct plays (in fact I had a part in one!) at the Derby Hall though I think the 'Interchange' project was a different (more political?) troupe.”
“I was at this show, terrible sound I seem to remember; can't recall Wilson showing-up though. The manager here was a lad called Dennis who was a friend of my then girlfriend. We also saw Sade play here around the same time. If I'm not mistaken, the Sade gig was promoted by Nathan McGough who went on to manage Happy Mondays and Mick Patterson who became ACR's manager.”
“Sad news; I was speaking to Vibes' owner Gordon Oakes in the pub the other night and he's had to close the shop. He was apparently losing too much money to even wait to see if Bury's HMV branch was going to be one that they're closing. If the latter does happen, it will leave a borough with a population of 185,000 without a record shop at all.”
“Judging by the fact that it's the most expensive ticket, I'd assume that the 'All About Eve' were the 'well-known' band (fronted by Julianne Reagan) rather than the local band of the same name. I did hear some tale about the 'local' AAE being booked to play the BBC's Oxford Road Show then 'on the night' not being allowed to perform due to them not being Musicians Union members.”
