“The Earwigs frontman was actually Steve Brotherdale the ex - drummer from V2 and Warsaw. I did a bit of work with them during '82/83. They were actually great musicians but struggled to keep things together because of a fondness for recreationals, B'dale had a great voice a bit like Jim Morrison (and come to think about it Ian Curtis). “These flyers are great. I'm pretty sure I started djing friday nights at the poly in the September of '78 when another Miles (Newby) was social sec. I must have had a bit of clout by this time, because it was my suggestion to have Wah support U2 (after a lot of mythering by Pete Wylie!). Cheers Steve Toon”
“I used to dj there in the very early days at weekends. I used to dj The Pheonix or UMIST union first and then nip down and do a couple of hours at the Sporran. I had a massive row with Costas one night because he objected to me plugging my other gigs. I guest dj'd there on occasion until about '81.”
“I was actually the dj at the Poly between '78 and '82 (you can see the ad for Toon The Loon's Poly DIsco on Fridays). I dj'd at most of the gigs. I remember after the Honeydripper's gig we took some of the band to the Cyprus Tavern and the old lady on the door initially wouldn't let Robert Plant in because he wasn't a student or a member!”
“Sorry to correct you, but The Pheonix started as a 7 nights a week rock venue in 1974 with myself (Steve Toon), Simon Barton Barton Bates and Dane (Danny) Kelly djing. I used to do Friday and Sunday nights, Dane did Saturdays and Simon Thursdays, with Simon and I doing the rest of the week between us. Big Steve was a regular customer and eventually took over from me in 1977 when I left to dj at The Poly. Cheers”
