David Wilkinson SAYS -
Possibly my favourite City Fun feature, 'Pam Ponders' is the pretend diary column of a 40-something alternative-lifestyler and the most exquisitely barbed satire of ageing hippies. Phrases like "PENILE FASCISM" and descriptions of mature chats over a nut cutlet abound amidst the salacious reportage of provincial free love and updates on family pets Sitwell the cat and Prentiss the slug. If you didn't know City Fun's politics, it might just seem like a cruel right-wing mockery of 60s and 70s utopianism. I suspect, however, that what really underpinned 'Pam Ponders' was not so much a rejection of the hippie values that a lot of younger punks and post-punks shared, but the feeling that their elders hadn't actually gone far enough; they'd become complacent, mystified and cliched.
