"Herr Hitler made me fifteen minutes late for the sausage and mash, which is a serious matter," writes Geoffrey to Ida. He had to walk a way home when the air raid warning came up, which is "again a serious matter, for no walk is really attractive unless you are walking with me."
He praises the new BBC radio channel that worked strongly even through the warning.
He talks of plans to enlist in the air force to support the war effort with his pal from work, and is glad this his business plans didn't work out to buy a travel agents in Rusholme since now the war has started.
Most tragically, fish and chips isn't quite what it used to be due to rationing and shortages.

Griff carried a gas mask onto the bus, "never let it be said that I am always disobedient."
He asks her to the pictures, to see Greta Garbo's "Ninotchka" or "The Rains Came".
He laments about not seeing more of the area, "I sign for all the places I meant to visit but haven't", like Bramhall park and valley.
He's taken Boris his cello out of his corner but the weather has "played pranks" on the strings, and Miss Davies "of the Large Hats" who tried to sell him a cello but he's not a comfortable bargainer.
He's been very active lately with exercise which is of course an omen of bad health to come, and gives Ida a list of 7 illnesses that may be forthcoming.

While negotiating travel expenses during WW2, Griff remarks to Ida that "the recent scare has made those who can travel more shy than ever." Working at a travel agents during the war was tricky business it seems.
They seem to want to arrange a rendezvous on a train? A discrete get together involving delicate coughs and signalling down rows.

This letter is tagged with a note reading "the transport nerd" by Ida, and quite appropriately too. He makes up for it when complimenting her dress as the latest game of rummy. "As you know, Dear Ida, you are well worth looking at and last night for example your pretty dress with the short sleeves allowed a most pleasing view of your arms."
Some budgeting complacency from the man who works the books, "I am very careless with odd coppers (i.e. coins of the Realm of Small Denomination, or value, not the large and handsome human kind so popular with certain girls who possess hair that is neither strictly blonde nor strictly brunette.)" I have no idea what that means, mind. Any takers?

Griff writes to Ida, "please please don't worry about sirens (i.e. high-pitched wailing sounds indicative of approaching enemy aircraft) and me, if there is an trouble and I am out, I've no intention of standing about and gaging witlessly at the heavens. The nearest shelter every time for me, or between something, in a prone position, to reduce the chance of splinters!" Smart lad.
They're planning a day out at Lyme Park but he doesn't mind "all I ask is that you shall be there." He's reading "Shabby Tiger", a book by Howard Spring set in Manchester.

Geoffrey Griffiths writes to Ida Carroll, mentioning Glenluce - the name of the house of the Carrolls.
Ida seems to have sent Griff a photo of herself, "the subject of the photo is too modest, the subject is not a fair judge and again shows her powers of aggravation in differing from me on this point." It sounds like she's been very demure about the quality of the pic, Griff loyally disagrees.
He gives his opinions on the war update, "Poland will soon be crushed, I'm afraid, then we may learn what we are up against in the way of concentrated attacks towards the west."
It sounds like there is some leafleteering planned? "The dropping of those leaflets is a jolly good idea, but the army and the secret police seem to be all powerful."
He wants to take her stargazing but she doesn't like to stray far from home at night, but he reckons the early warning system should be ample enough.
