Reviewed in the Guardian, the performance of L’Elisir D’Amore was “without filling the framework to its limits, to be pleasant and enjoyable on its own modest scale.” The small stage was “adroitly and intelligently used”.

The Canterbury Pilgrims is apparently a tricky bit of music to perform. According to the Guardian review, the school's performance didn’t solve all of the problems with the piece but “it was engagingly done and was faithful to the special atmosphere of the music”. The chorus sang well but the reviewer remarks that "it was nobody’s fault that under last night’s conditions they were often submerged, in vigorous pages, by the orchestra."

A huge variety of composers in these packed concerts. We have long established composers, contemporary British and, for the first time I think for the school, a Chinese playwright S.I. Hsiung. I'm not sure if it's been put to music or if it's been performed by the drama students of the college.

The Snow Queen! A classic winter fantasy. I would have loved to see this.
It's a full school combo effort from the music and drama students of the Northern School of Music. It's with the Manchester University Arts Festival (run in the mid-late 1950s I think). Again a largely female cast. I think I would have been a polar bear. I could possibly manage that.

The Northern School of Music's Speech and Drama students did a few of G.B. Shaw's plays. With a largely female student body some, any part is up for grabs, male or female.

Interestingly, Shaw is a weird one. By the time these plays were being performed in 1957 by the school, he'd been dead a few years. His socialism and Marxism became quite vicious and turned full circle into firm beliefs about eugenics. I wonder if they knew this when they programmed his work?

Given that reviews of the Northern School of Music often remark on how few male singers they have, Mignon is an interesting choice with a mostly male cast. Perhaps the gender imbalance had evened out a bit, even with Sylvia Peters playing Frederick.
