The Northern School of Music's orchestra. There seems to have been a point where programme notes, describing and exploring the music, was included in the programme instead of just a list of works and student names (a pity - those are pretty handy). This concert is a chunk of Beethoven music.

At this point, Aylmer Buesst was in his 80s and still conducting. I can't see a review of the performance yet but I wonder how Tessa Hutlgreen did with the famous Queen of the Night aria? If anyone remembers the Northern School, leave your memories in the comments below.

The Northern School of Music were fond of mixing up orchestra and choral works, along with their penchant for oratorios. I wonder what it was like in the Houldsworth Hall, in Church House on Deansgate, was a favourite of the school for performances.

A long programme of song recitals at the Northern School of Music. Interestingly, Bruce Montgomery whose music is programmed here is a pseudonym of Edmund Crispin, a crime writer and composer of the scores for the Carry On films.

Ernest Read, another firm friend of the Northern School of Music, has a scholarship in his name for string playing. He often gave recitals for the school and taught students. His generosity of time and effort also extended to a scholarship for students wanting the chance to study at the school.

Frederick Moore was a great friend of the Northern School of Music. The scholarship in his name supported young pianists wishing for a chance to study at the school.

Alfreda Hodgson, a contralto singer from Morcambe, was a student at the Northern School of Music. She went on to have a successful career as a performer. She's here accompanied by NSM's own John Wilson. One of the composers, Hamilton Harty, was the conductor of the Hallé orchestra in the 1920s.

More piano music! Piano was the original instrument that founded the school. Tobias Matthay, who the school was inspired by in 1920 and who was the teacher of founder Hilda Collens, made a legacy for himself in formulating new techniques for playing and teaching piano.

Martha, a romantic comedy opera, is performed by the Northern School of Music. One of the Guardian reviews mentions it is "one of the oddities of operatic history. It has been slain by shafts of ridicule a hundred and one times." No pressure then chaps. However the performance itself was only let down by the small space of the venue, "its defects were largely those of the hall, which is acoustically unsympathetic under the best conditions, but is almost hostile when a large orchestra, struggling gamely with Flotow’s sometimes heavy scoring, is occupying space normally available to the audience."
