Ida and pals playing cards. Possibly Griff on the right? Or he could be taking the photo. According to Griff's letters to Ida around this time, this was a favourite past time of the couple.

It's Griff! This cheery chappy is Geoffrey Griffiths. Originally a Manchester travel agent, he fell in love with Ida Carroll and they maintained a beautifully written correspondence throughout WW2. After the war, he became the bursar of the Northern School of Music, to be closer to Ida.

Ida Carroll was to become one of the most memorable women in Manchester's education heritage. Student, secretary and then principal of the Northern School of Music, she was passionate about the school and musical education. Something you apparently found out very quickly if you wrong footed her!
