Northern School Of Music (NSM), Houldsworth Hall
Programme, 1960
A Manchester's première! Kendall Taylor, pianist and friend of the Northern School of Music, performs Norman Fulton's "Prelude, Elegy and Toccata". It seems like it was published first in 1954, so it's super new in the scheme of repertoire.

An advert for the Northern School of Music's "Junior Exhibition" bursary. Open to anyone 12-17 years old. Do you know anyone who won one of these bursaries? They must have shown "exceptional promise".

The Easter Concert for 1959 at the Northern School of Music. A couple of contemporary composers as usual, like Ernest Moeran and Arthur Benjamin. Only a couple of composers from Greater Manchester in the programmes so far, though. Fingers crossed for more!

Check out the pics of this performance by the Northern School of Music on the NSM exhibition here on the MDMA site. Looked like a jolly good romp. Reviewed in the Guardian, the performance of L’Elisir D’Amore was “without filling the framework to its limits, to be pleasant and enjoyable on its own modest scale.” The small stage was “adroitly and intelligently used”.

Love a good Christmas sing along. I must admit that my repertoire spans between Mariah Carey and Wham! but I reckon I could give this a bash.

If they disapprove of clapping they may disapprove of singing along. Then *why* but the lyrics in the programme? Admittedly it makes a rather odd kareoke.

An Easter concert by the Northern School of Music is packed with music and soloists of the school getting some needed experience in performing.

It's a lot of music to put on in the NSM premises, with their small recital room.

The Canterbury Pilgrims is apparently a tricky bit of music to perform. According to the Guardian review, the school's performance didn’t solve all of the problems with the piece but “it was engagingly done and was faithful to the special atmosphere of the music”. The chorus sang well but the reviewer remarks that "it was nobody’s fault that under last night’s conditions they were often submerged, in vigorous pages, by the orchestra."

A huge variety of composers in these packed concerts. We have long established composers, contemporary British and, for the first time I think for the school, a Chinese playwright S.I. Hsiung. I'm not sure if it's been put to music or if it's been performed by the drama students of the college.

The Snow Queen! A classic winter fantasy. I would have loved to see this.
It's a full school combo effort from the music and drama students of the Northern School of Music. It's with the Manchester University Arts Festival (run in the mid-late 1950s I think). Again a largely female cast. I think I would have been a polar bear. I could possibly manage that.
