The Northern School of Music host a recital from one its most successful students, Wigan-born Pauline Tinsley. Performing in operas all over the country, Tinsley has become one the school's most public alumni.

Reviewed in the Guardian, the performance of L’Elisir D’Amore was “without filling the framework to its limits, to be pleasant and enjoyable on its own modest scale.” The small stage was “adroitly and intelligently used”.

The Canterbury Pilgrims is apparently a tricky bit of music to perform. According to the Guardian review, the school's performance didn’t solve all of the problems with the piece but “it was engagingly done and was faithful to the special atmosphere of the music”. The chorus sang well but the reviewer remarks that "it was nobody’s fault that under last night’s conditions they were often submerged, in vigorous pages, by the orchestra."

The Northern School of Music performs at the Houldsworth Hall to gather financial support for the Old Students' Association Bursary Fund. These sorts of funds were vital in supporting young people who could not afford the tuition without help.

A huge variety of composers in these packed concerts. We have long established composers, contemporary British and, for the first time I think for the school, a Chinese playwright S.I. Hsiung. I'm not sure if it's been put to music or if it's been performed by the drama students of the college.

The Snow Queen! A classic winter fantasy. I would have loved to see this.
It's a full school combo effort from the music and drama students of the Northern School of Music. It's with the Manchester University Arts Festival (run in the mid-late 1950s I think). Again a largely female cast. I think I would have been a polar bear. I could possibly manage that.
