Harold Jones ?1885-mid 20th C

Harold Jones joined the Royal Manchester College of Music at age 13 in 1898 to study the violin. He stayed with the college until 1905, earning qualification in performance. He was welcomed immediately into the Hallé Orchestra amongst its first violin, and stayed with the orchestra for at least 20 years. From 1910 onwards he performs regularly in Manchester, is featured on the radio, and advertises his services as a teacher.

Three programmes devoted to the history of the Hallé, based on archive material from the BBC. Includes interviews with former members, including: [Programme 1] Harold Jones, violinist, recalling Richter & Harty; Leonard Hirsch, violinist, recalling Harty. Harty himself features talking about Berlioz. JB talks about his arrival in Manchester in 1943 and his recruitment of new players. There are also performances by the Hallé, conducted by JB, 1969 Proms, Viennese Evening, Haydn's Symphony No 83; finale of Bruckner's 8th Symphony, conducted by JB 1970. [Programme 2] The Hallé & 'modern' music, Richter & Wagner; JB. JB & Leonard Behrens interviewed in 1958. Performances of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, conducted by JB; Webern's Six pieces for Orchestra, conducted by Bruno Maderna; Lennox Berkeley's Third Symphony, conducted at the Cheltenham Festival by Sir Charles Groves in 1979.
