Charles Kelly 1884-1942
Charles Kelly was a pianist and came to the Royal Manchester College of Music pretty young at 14 years old in the September of 1902, staying until May 1909. He won the Siloti Prize (established in honour of Alexander Siloti, virtuoso pianist) and jointly the Dayas Gold Medal with Lucy Pierce in 1909. He performed regularly during his time at the RMCM, and gave recitals around the city, abroad and on the radio after his graduation, noted for developing his own style of "fullness and breadth". During the First World War he served in the Army and was noted for playing piano to boost morale. He was contracted with the BBC in 1924 as its Northern Studio pianist, especially in its work with children's music.

Autograph letter signed from Ashworth Barnes to Adolph Brodsky - 1 item
1909
Ashworth Barnes is writing on behalf of the Accrington Chamber Concerts. For the first concert on 12 November, he would like to have a quartet from the College: Mr. Alfred Barker, Miss Kontorovitch, Miss Dorothy Haworth and Mr. Seth Lancaster. On the same evening it is proposed to have Charles Kelly and Norman Allin with Alwyne Bowne as accompanist. In a postscript, Barnes mentions that they would like to have had Toni Maaskoff but the expense of the fare to and from London and the difficulty of rehearsal are in the way. The letter is dated 27 Sep 1909.
