The King George's Hall in Blackburn is a lovely, Morrissey-esque venue, and this was a great gig with a strong setlist. At this point, Moz was without a record deal and debuting material from 'You Are the Quarry'. He was selling out 2000-capacity venues with no new product.
"Hello Blackburn! I'm right behind you with a bucket!" was his opening gambit.
I was sitting quite far back in the upper circle, as I recall, and remember hankering after the moshpit a little. Looking back at the setlist now, I think it's a shame that I don't remember more about it - I don't remember 'Alsatian Cousin', for example; I'd love to hear that again live.
I do remember thinking that ' I Want the One I Can't Have' was a classy set-opener, and that he rolled around the floor a lot in 'Meat is Murder'.
I think it was around this time that Moz started making references to Julia, the superfan who has been to every single gig, and who nows runs the official website. Morrissey himself posts on this site from time to time; his letters are very chatty and warm. Here he talks about going to see 'Capote' and attempting a version of Roxy Music's 'Street Life.'
Setlist:
I Want The One I Can't Have / Suedehead / Little Man, What Now? / Hairdresser On Fire / Speedway / The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores / The First Of The Gang To Die / Jack The Ripper / Everyday Is Like Sunday / I Like You / Alsatian Cousin / Sister I'm A Poet / Meat Is Murder / November Spawned A Monster / Hand In Glove / Irish Blood, English Heart // There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
