First album by The Fall, on Step Forward Records, this a free copy -'fucking record company hype!' 12 inches black plastic. Recorded in a day in London, 38 minutes of music, 11 tracks, two sides.
"We're still on step ahead of you... I still beleive in the R'n'R dream, R'n'R as primal scream... tied to the puritan ethic, unsympathetic to spastics...after all this still a lonely bastard. ...eggheads, boneheads, que - qued for that... we were early, we were late. still. Live at the Witch Trials."
FRIGHTENED. track one, side one.
"Someones always on my tracks"...."I think I'm better than them, I think I'm the best". ... "and I'm always in a trance, aaah, and I sweat some". So the album opens. Yvonne Paulettes keyboards step up the scales and drop, deliberate, chord overlay.... "I've yet to know my actions" Mark Smiths voice is Clear and bleak, "I spend hours looking sideways"....Karl Burns Drums Powerfully, it's maverick prescence taking the piss out of conventional style. Martin Bramahs guitar jangles melody, drift, subdued, strung out. Bass Marc Riley, slow deliberation, chord progression, twist subtle move... "I don't wanna dance, I wanna go home, I'm frightened". Intensity builds to the end. I could hear this track forever and dance for hours.
CRAP RAP2/LIKE TO BLOW. track 2.
Insistant sustained dischord. "Don't fuck us, we are frigid stars". The rhythm continues.
REBELLIOUS JUKEBOX. track 3.
Rapid riffing introduces and bass runs down the scales while the keyboards are precise high notes. Drumming trips, continually drives, on beat solid. "Taxi for Mr. Nelson" infectious, commercial, a stage classic. "Rebellious jukebox yeaeh" [CONTINUED OVER]
