On New Gate Street, just off Shudehill, there is a club called the Piccader, which is one of those contraception clubs,it could be as reliable as the Pill,if used correctly.
Enter for a pound,or fifty pence if you know someone who’s a regular…….. Up one flight of stairs, you come to a toilet and a cig machine, then a room with a drinks bar and food. Occaisionally you may find a drummer and an organist, working on the small stage provided…
But, IF you want some action, you will probably find more to do up some stairs again. At the top of the stairs are some more toilets, walk further in, you come to the bar………. further, not much…. the dance floor……. In the corner, the cute D.J, Alan…….. In a cage…. On one side, a few tables and chairs.
You may notice a few rather tall women, with heavily made up faces, looking more feminine than Larry Grayson.BUT, will you notice the unhappiness in them. You may have to look twice at a few of the people to decide who is male, and who is female…….. If you are into sex distinction………. and, by the way, if you make a decision, you could be wrong…..
No need to worry which toilets you use, this is a good club for people with people with hang ups about toilets………. Not posh, just the usual porcelain and black plastic, with some boring and some interesting reading material on the walls.
Which brings us to the D.J. Yes, he uses the toilets, too. He has a limited variety of plastics, the usual Disco shit, with a couple of good sounds, like, At the moment, Sylvester. He usually keeps to the Chart stuff, which can be a bit boring at times, but if he plays something you really HATE,you can always go to the toilet, upstairs or downstairs…………..
If you want to be part of the posher Gay Scene, perhaps Dickens will be more suitable, but I find the Piccador to be a more friendly atmosphere. If you REALLY want to be posh,De Villes, just off Albert Square ,is the place to go. But take plenty of money…..Five pounds membership for a year…..
Although its supposed to be a gay club, plenty of straights around. I’ve only ever been in the week. The D.J. is excellent, and in the week theres plenty of room to dance.
Another club, Simms, has moved and changed its name to Slingsbys….. I couldnt get in when I went…….. SOD THEM, Didnt want to go in anyway…… Napoleons wouldnt let me in either…
