“I remember the first Karaoke nights in the Gay Traitor hosted by Tony Wilson, he’d been to Japan recently and brought a karaoke machine back with him. It was still a very new thing and quite unique, not the marker of a shite pub that it is nowadays. Anyway my friend Paul couldn’t resist the allure of 3 minutes of fame and got up on an old beer crate (the stage) to give a heartfelt rendition of Madonna’s Holiday which went well until someone on the balcony decided enough was enough and chucked a bottle at him. That signalled an abrupt end to his karaoke career!”
