This was, perhaps, my favourite Morrissey gig of the many I have seen.
I had travelled down to the Big Smoke to spend the weekend with my best mate - a fellow Moz die-hard. Unfortunately, her boyfriend had chosen that weekend to end their relationship, and hurl her out of their flat.
After a few emergency phone calls, we found a flat to crash in. The owner was away, but his ugly old ginger cat was very much in evidence and had been vomiting everywhere. The cat's litter tray hadn't been changed for a while, and when we opened the door of the bedroom, it smelt like an open grave.
My friend and I stayed up all night and we were both husk-like and paranoid by the time it came to see Moz the following evening.
But as soon as we arrived at the glamorous Victorian venue, our spirits lifted. Our seats were amazing, the sound was sensational and when the main man took to the stage, resplendent in a tuxedo, the squalor of the preceding hours receded.
The crowd was incredibly buzzed up and responsive; the atmosphere positively party-like, and a grinning Moz asked at one point, "Err...is my dickie bow on straight?"
