Jackie McNeish interview
Interview: Yvonne McCalla
With kind permission of Commonword in colloboration with MDMArchive.
Jackie McNeish (born Old Trafford 1964) is the community development officer at the Moss Side Powerhouse youth centre.
In the early 80s her father and uncle, Pinch and Sonny Burton bought The Russell Club in Hulme with some fellow-bus driver friends and turned it into the PSV (Public Service Vehicle) club. Here Jackie remembers the packed atmosphere at The PSV (which continued to be known as The Russell informally) and the sense of community her father helped to create. She also recalls her first experience of reggae soundsystems at Moss Side Youth Club as a 14-year-old; the fashions of the era; and the strained relationship between the police and black community, which culminated in the 1981 riot.
