Kenny Williams was born in Moss Side in 1938. Before joining the RAF in the 1960s, he worked as jazz singer all over Manchester, appearing regularly at The Nile. Here he talks about the pre-Reno club The Palm Beach; Monton House shebeen; meeting Muhammed Ali; gigging with Calypsonian legend Lord Kitchener; and what it was like growing up as a 'Shine Boy' (a term for mixed-race, Liverpudlian in origin) on Upper Lloyd Street.
