From City Life, 50th edition, with Victoria Wood on the cover; including an article on the previous 2 and a half years trials and tribulations of the mag since its inception on Dec 16th ’83 till this issue.It’s the first Manchester “What’s On” guide since the demise of the New Manchester Review,(1976-80).Lots of hurdles, mostly of the financial type, during this period with little or no help from the powers that be; i.e. other publishing concerns and particularly the Manchester City Council, which seems to have had a vendetta against the mag, probably because it was a constant thorn in the said establishment’s side, particularly concerning exposes of untoward and rumoured corruption allegations within its ranks. Then, of course, there was the well documented and on-going run- ins with Manchester’s chief constable and God’s chief advisor, James Anderton and his finest.
In October ’85, there’s a fire in their offices on Portland St, cause “undetermined”,forcing the relocation of the publication.The following month there was the “graffiti incident” at Poundswick school, (what exactly was written on those walls?),which had a domino effect, causing teachers’ strikes, questions in the House and letters to the Times I’m sure.I believe the mag is now defunct.
