Artefact
From City Life 20, Nov ’84.With John Hurt on the cover, with the caption "1984:the film of the year". Well that year came and went without too much fanfare and, like most kids who'd read the book in the '70's at school, it felt like that year was so far in the future that it might never come.Close to 30 years ago now, it doesn't seem that far back at all!Interview with Frank “Foo Foo” Lamarr at his back street institution, The Palace. Makes an interesting read. Started out as a North of England Boxing Champion;worked in a cotton mill and then worked his way up in a waste paper factory to management before taking a gamble and opening The Picador Club in ’72 which was a resounding success and so had to move to bigger premises which became “Foo Foo’s Palace.” States that 90% of his audience are women, and in the interview he slags off Quentin Crisp something rotten. “..he’s just a silly old Queen going round the world showing off.....looks like Barbra Cartland’s grandmother...like something that fell off a comic front” and so on....
I only went to The Palace once and was sooo glad we hadn’t sat near the front. He was merciless as well as extremely funny.
