From City Life 10, May ’84. Don’t think I’ve clocked this club being used as a venue so here’s an upload for it. I’m not sure if I ever knew where this club was so I presume I never went to it....Other stuff in this issue:-Eleanor Bron in “the Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie” at The Royal Exchange. I only remember this ‘cos I was walking the across that building for whatever reason and I saw the said lady walk past me in a tracksuit. I thought she looked familiar and I remember thinking ..nice arse! With hind site (literally), I should have gone up and paid her the compliment but as I had a bit of an aversion to getting thumped back in those days I thought better of it; pity really...
There is/ used to be a stall in the basement of the building (or was it across the road...?) that sold cultural artifacts from round the world and it used to fascinate me. It had things like shark jaws, wood carvings from Rajasthan and Bali, giant spiders/ stick insects in cases etc. and evoked images of exotic paradises and far-off tropical jungles; all the while being stood under the traffic on Cross St. There was also a shop opposite Marks and Sparks that sold all things Japanese; kimonos, calligraphy prints, sushi accoutrements and the like....again it hinted at foreign lands and seemed wildly exotic for the city at that time in the early ‘80s.Thinking all things oriental, I'm not sure if it's true but I remember hearing years ago that Manchester had the 4th biggest Chinatown in the world; doesn't seem very likely.... Then there was the ace Oasis Garden centre off Tib St. which I’ve mentioned before, which was great to walk through on a freezing winter’s day as it was huge, enclosed and heated as it only sold tropical plants, fish and as I recall the odd reptile. It was a little bit of paradise in that enclave, which back then was a bit of a run down, derelict part of the town.
Films on at the flicks:-“Daniel” at the Aaben; jeez that was depressing;”Under Fire” with Nick Nolte and Gene Hackman, good ‘un that; “Educating Rita” , “Footloose” etc.
On the back cover an add for a new invention courtesy of British Telecom, a press button phone instead of the old dially ones; the kind which, by the time you'd managed to call the fire brigade your house may have very well burnt down; It's a fact people......
