Jeez! Just spent the last hour trying to find where scanned images went. The settings got changed and it was listed under thumbnails, whatever that is.... Won’t get much done now,;aaaanyway.....
Up to City Life 9, April ’84 with “Big” Ron Greenwood on the cover.Got a reggae platter by old skool M.C. Dennis Alcapone, all about the ’82 world cup and it namechecks him..
“If England want to do some good, hear me now Ron Greenwood.
Forget your pride and your prejudice and carry the man Cyril Regis.
Take out your little book and write the name Garth Crooks....”
Of course it’s pure poetry and he chats it in a patois.
On the same tip there’s another football tribute called “Starliner” by John McClean and the mighty Ranking Toyan, about Tottenham and Rangers at Wembley, circa the same time; it’s a killer! Not enough songs about football I always find. There’s the one with Mark Smith reciting football results, New Order’s “World in Motion”, “Back Home” with Peter Osgood on falsetto, Hoddle and Waddle....actually there’s loads of them....shouldn’t stir up that hornet’s nest. Well I digress and I haven’t even started!
Just thought I’d scan in this Apollo “Forthcoming Attractions” as it’s interesting in so far as how bland it mostly is; just goes to show not everything was peachy creamy in showbizz world in the mid '80's. I was walking past The Portland hotel, must have been sometime around this period when I noticed a girl sat on the front seat of a coach, obviously waiting for others to embark and as I passed ,due to a sign on the side I realised it was that Nena girl but without her make up on; she didn’t look quite as fit as the one singing “Neinety neine luft ballons” on T.O,T.P. ;the very reason it made it bearable to watch. T’was then that I knew that maybe, sometimes the camera does indeed lie.
There used to be a tropical fish shop over the road from the Apollo called Tahiti Aquariums,;wonder if they got much through traffic from visiting performers; Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a piranha, that sort of a thing..........? Probably not....
